2018 06-30 SB Channel
High clouds in the morning gave way to sunny skies in the afternoon. The ocean surface was glassy and flat all day. Closely watched totals for the trip included: 17+ blue whales, 1 fin whale, and 700 long-beaked common dolphins. Captain Dave estimates as many as 30 blue whales in the general area today.
Our first sighting took place 4 miles from the harbor when a couple hundred dolphins located the Condor Express. Great looks were had by all, aquatic and terrestrial mammals alike. A few miles to the south, a much larger heard of dolphins located the Condor and mixed in with them was a single humpback whale. Again we had fine looks.
Dave continued on a course for the west end of Santa Cruz Island and the blue whale hotspot. Upon arrival, there were more whales than we’ve seen in quite a while. Dave estimated at least 30 giant blue whales were in the zone. Of course we did not have time to watch every one of them. There were two cow calf pairs mixed in, one was “Wave” and its. While we were watching all the blue whales a single fin way I came through.
