5 humpbacks. 2 of them were very entertaining juveniles.

2019 05-14 SB Channel

The Channel was cool under a thick marine stratus layer. Seas were calm. The Condor Express ran across the entire Channel and watched all of the marine life along the way. Totals for the day included 5 humpback whales and 50 California sea lions.

We located our initial 2 humpbacks south of The Lanes. There was an adult swimming separately from a juvenile. The juvenile whale was interacting with a mob of sea lions, and diving synchronously with the furry little beasts. One could easily predict where the small whale would eventually surface because the sea lions came up first to mark the spot.

Out west of the west end of Santa Cruz Island a pair of whales turned out to be a mother humpback with her calf. The little calf rolled around, did some head stands, and made several very friendly close approached to the boat.

On the route home and less than 5 miles from our last encounter a single juvenile whale was feeding beneath the surface and had attracted hundreds of sea birds and more sea lions to the spot.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
