2018 05-23 SB Channel
Captain Dave and his expert crew crossed the entire Santa Barbara Channel today and located a massive wildlife hot spot very close to Prisoner’s Harbor at Santa Cruz Island today. Sightings for the day included: 2 fin whales, 3 humpback whales, 850 long-beaked common dolphins and 500 California sea lions. Skies had a light overcast all days but the ocean was calm and glassy.
Near mid-Channel, en route to the island, a small group of dolphins located the Condor Express and had a nice play session. Dave continued south on his original heading and did not see much wildlife until we reached the island.
At Santa Cruz Island there were actively feeding sea birds of all kinds, masses of California sea lions, hundreds of dolphins and whales, all feeding below the surface and spending lots of up-time for a wonderful sighting period. Among the whales there was a mother humpback and her calf. The mother let loose a massive, full-body breach near the boat, then her calf did the same. This repeated four times, each sending white water flying in all directions. Soon a third humpback joined the group. Great looks were had by all. Finally, 2 fin whales moved in and passed through the zone…providing an exclamation point to a wonderful day.
