Calm seas. Lots of dolphins. Among 5 humpback whales one goes wild in non-stop breaching episode.

2021 07-27 SB Channel

An early marine layer burned off to nice sunny skies. Seas were flat and calm once again. Sightings included 5 humpback whales, 75 offshore bottlenose dolphins, and 3000 long-beaked common dolphins. One cluster of 7 deadly helium Mylar balloons was salvaged from the ocean surface.

Captain Dave and his crew took a direct southerly course and it was not long before the first common dolphins located the Condor Express. About 6 miles offshore the common dolphin pods increased in both size and frequency. Soon two individual humpback whales were attracted to all the dolphin activity and their subsurface feeding. Good looks were had.

Continuing south, three more individual whales were watched in the separation zone between the outbound and inbound commercial shipping lanes. All were large adults. One worked itself up into a breaching frenzy and never stopped breaching for over an hour. Time ran out and we had to head back to the harbor and the beast was still at it. Several momentary pauses in the breaching marathon were taken so the whale could get in some upper body exercise through short pectoral fin slapping episodes. Then…back to the breaching.

Plenty of common dolphins were all around this active leviathan, and a nice pod of offshore bottlenose dolphins also passed by the area.
