2022 08-12 Oil Rig Charter
This is a quick informational report on a private Charter, oil rig tour up to the far west and Platforms Hondo, Harmony, Heritage off the Gaviota coast. Although the primary focus was on the rigs, we did closely watch: 2 humpback whales, 1250 long-beaked common dolphins and 150 California sea lions (including animals on the rigs and their mooring cans).
Interesting fact, Platform Harmony is in 800 feet of water and the entire structure is taller than the Empire State Building in NY.
Scattered dolphin pods were watched on the westbound leg of the trip. On the way home, with wind and seas astern, larger pods of dolphins were seen and one hosted a pair of humpback whales. The whales were feeding subsurface alongside their smaller “cousins.”
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
