Captain Dave and the crew experienced flat, calm seas all day. Skies were shrouded by a thick marine stratus layer. Totals for the trip included 5 humpback whales and 1500 long-beaked common dolphins.
Dolphins first approached the Condor Express when we were about 10 miles offshore. They were around during all of our sightings for the rest of the day. Patches of dolphins with 100 or so animals each were seen feeding among the sea birds and California sea lions.
Our first 2 whales were both juveniles and we had nice looks. Both were good flukers. A bit later we were in The Lanes just past the NOAA buoy and found an additional pair of humpbacks, and watched as they initially moved around and dove together, but soon went their separate ways.
On the way home the 5th whale was watched.
