More Hawaii-like weather, more dolphins and whales.

2021 07-19 SB Channel

The same subtropical skies and moisture I wrote about yesterday persisted today and the conditions were similar: calm seas and blue skies. All of this made for perfect whale-finding and watching. Our totals today included 4000 long-beaked common dolphins and 9+ humpback whales. (+ means “more in the area”)

Very small groups of 10 or less dolphins were the norm until we reached the hot spot west of Santa Barbara and 5 – 8 miles out. By the time Captain Dave and his crew brought the Condor Express southwest of Platform Holly, the pod sized were all in the hundreds and were everywhere…accompanied by noisy, diving seabirds. The Holly location yielded 4+ adult whales found one at a time. A mile west produced another 5+ including a mother and her calf. The mother-calf pair made several close visits to the boat, as if “junior” was being introduced to its fan club. The calf also did a bit of rolling around on the surface. As previously mentioned, additional spouts were seen at both locations.
