Hallelujah…clear sunny skies and calm seas prevailed today. One could see Santa Cruz Island in the morning. The wind did fill-in a little bit in the afternoon but otherwise it was a gorgeous day for watching wildlife. Today we encountered 3000 long-beaked common dolphins, 3 humpback whales, and 6 Risso’s dolphins. Captain Dave took the Condor Express south towards Santa Cruz Island and when we were about 10 miles out, we began to hit the jackpot with dolphins. Dolphins were around all day and they were in large pods. A single juvenile humpback was also located in this spot.
Dave then took a little turn to the west for a while and, before long, encountered a group of 6 Risso’s dolphins. We have not seen these large, white dolphins for a while, so it was fantastic especially on such a clear sunny day. The boat turned and headed back to the east. When we were southeast of Habitat. in an area on the edge of The Flats, two additional large adult humpbacks were found. They were surrounded by dolphins. One of the big adults threw its monster tail two or three times. This got everyone’s attention, humans, whales and dolphins alike. Wow! On the way back to the Harbor, the west wind picked up a bit, but no worries, it was a sunny day ! You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
