So much cetacean life today including throngs of humpbacks & some great high-flying dolphins!

2021 09-10 SB Channel

Captain Colton and the crew of the Condor Express found another wonderfully calm day in the Channel. Overcast skies were hugging the coast, but once we ventured out a bit the skies were bright and blue. Sightings were phenomenal again: 15+ humpback whales, 4800 long-beaked common dolphins and 200 short-beaked common dolphins.

Long-beaked common dolphins were found in dense groups everywhere we went today starting just 1 mile outside the harbor. Several of these large aggregations were feeding hot spots also used by humpback whales. When we were 4 miles offshore a highly animated and aerial pod of short-beaked common dolphins located us and put on a wonderful exhibit of their high-flying, tail-walking and even flipping abilities. Such a wonderful and energetic species!

North of the NOAA East Channel Buoy we watched our first 5 whales surrounded by more short-beaked common dolphins. After wonderful looks, Colton moved east of the buoy and watched 6 more, with lots of additional spouts in all directions. Further north we watched 5 more. It was a wonderful humpback-filled day.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR!

After having such wonderful sights further offshore (we were several miles south of San Miguel Island at one point) on our special 8-hour whale watch last month, Captain Dave is going to do it again! We’ll have plenty to time to explore every nook and cranny known to cetaceans and look for pelagic birds along the way.

Make your reservations now: Saturday, September 25 – 8am to 4pm
