Three members of the largest whale species in the world…dolphins too!

2020 06-27 SB Channel – East

Dense fog during the first leg of the excursion gave way to sunny skies on the way back home. Again, our lucky streak with mirror-like surface conditions persisted today. Sightings today included 1 giant blue whale, 2 fin whales and 2000 long-beaked common dolphins.

The dolphins first located the Condor Express when we were about 4 miles offshore on a southeasterly course heading. The first group was very large but took turns coming to the boat and surfing our waves. There were scattered pods throughout the trip. Near the harbor, in the afternoon, Captain Dave kept the boat on its course and speed even when a pod of dolphins was seen in the near distance. The speed immediately attracted the little beasts and many leaped in the air to gain speed and catch up with us.

The blue whale and fins were found off the eastern end of the Channel, in the shipping lanes (The Lanes) adjacent to beautiful Potato Harbor. The blue went through seemingly slow motion tail fluking on every dive…a classic icon for photographers and nature-lovers a like. The fin whales appeared to be the same two we watched yesterday. One was rather large, the other much smaller. As before, the fins were easy to watch and boat-friendly.

As a side note, there was more ship traffic in the Channel today than we have encountered for a long time. Tankers, bulk carriers and container vessels made up the majority of the ships.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store. Bob Perry Condor Express, and
