Thursday, September 8, 2016 – Gorgeous sea conditions and loads of marine life including 6 humpback whales, 1,500 long-beaked common dolphins, and a mob of at least 250 California sea lions. Whales were near the islands today.
Things began to heat up about a mile north of The Cave. Here loads of dolphins came to the Condor Express, and that mega-mob of sea lions is still on fire. The visit to Santa Cruz island included Captain Dave’s excellent interpretation and a penetration of the Cave entrance. It is always a thrill. Two large ocean sunfish or Mola mola were also observed.
Moving west of The Cave, and a few miles off Santa Rosa Island, 6 humpback whales were watched closely with more within close binocular range. The whales had apparently shifted a few miles west of yesterday’s hot spot. Great sightings were had by all.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store. Bob Perry Condor Express
