7 humpback whales and 1,000 dolphins

2017 08-13 SB Channel

Sightings included 7* humpback whales and over 1,000 long-beaked common dolphins.  It was overcast in the morning and the skies turned sunny by late morning.  A very light breeze wafted across the decks of the Condor Express in the afternoon.

Dolphins located the boat Captain Eric took us past Platform Holly, and they were located in hot spots thereafter.  A large hot spot was located in The Lanes adjacent to the eastern end of Santa Rosa Island.  Here we saw sea birds (mostly shearwaters), California sea lions, dolphins, and whales.  Second Captain Tasha, working in the Condor Café today, spotted the first humpback whale at a distance of 5 miles while looking out of the galley and main salon windows.  How does she do it?  We closely watched 7 whales, but there were *at least a dozen in the neighborhood.

A pair of humpback whales got very interested in the Condor Express, made a friendly approach, then hung around near our hulls for a nice period of time so everyone could enjoy the view and take a few whelfies.
