A northbound gray, a humpback and plenty of offshore bottlenose.

2020 01-30 SB Channel

The weather was nice near the beach today in the land of the migrating gray whales, but offshore where the big dolphins and the humpbacks play it was a different story. Sightings for today included 50 offshore bottlenose dolphins, one gray whale, and one humpback whale. As the day began we encountered a gray whale not very far offshore. Strangely, for this time of year when most of the whales are heading south to Baja, this was a very shy northbound gray. Makes you wonder!

Further offshore and south of the lanes a nice big herd of offshore bottlenose found the Condor Express. These large animals are always fun to watch because they are generally very animated and also boat friendly.

After running up towards Santa Rosa island we encountered a juvenile humpback whale in the middle of the Channel. The whale was spotted because there were loads of marine birds diving and carrying on, so we assume this whale was feeding on bait fairly close to the surface.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
