2019 09-03 SB Channel
Captain Dave and the crew of the Condor Express found calm seas and sunny skies throughout the day and wonderful sightings including: 5 inshore bottlenose dolphins, 6 humpback whales, and 1000 long-beaked common dolphins. We searched the offshore waters and located 2 hot spots.
The first sighting of the day was not exactly a “hot spot,” but we did have the good fortune to encounter a small pod of coastal bottlenose dolphins and followed them from the harbor entrance buoy into the East Beach Anchorage. Wonderful looks were had.
The first legit hot spot was 10 miles south of Goleta and included hundreds of common dolphins and 2 whales. The whales appeared to be a large adult (mother?) and a small juvenile (calf?). The juvenile did a bit of rolling around on the surface in addition to diving (and feeding) sub-surface with the larger whale.
The larger hot spot was 14miles out and on the edge of The Lanes. Here we found hundreds more dolphins and 4 additional whales. One of the whales was our buddy Scarlet. The trip home included more dolphin interactions with the boat and its wake.
