The big whales are still around. Captain Tasha and the crew of the Condor Express closely watched 5 blue whales, 2 fin whales and 500 long-beaked common dolphins today. California sea lions were everywhere the dolphins went. Per usual, this count does not include animals “in the neighborhood” that we did not stop and get looks at. Skies were overcast all day, but the side effect of this was a glassy surface…perfect for wildlife viewing.
Dolphins were in groups, scattered all across the Santa Barbara Channel as Tasha headed southwest towards the hot spot near Santa Cruz Island. Numerous sea birds were with the dolphins as both fed together on surface bait fish. As they are accustomed, each dolphin group quickly located the boat and rode our bow, side and stern waves.
A few miles north of the western end of the island, the giants were still feeding below the surface and spending time up between dives, breathing. Wonderful looks were had today as most of the big whales had long surface times and looked great on the mirror ocean surface.
