Lots of surface feeding by hungry humpbacks.

2014 04-29 SB Channel

It was a sunny, clear day with not much wind until the afternoon excursion. Captain Dave and the crew of the Condor Express made the following sightings: 8 humpback whales and 25 long-beaked common dolphins. Three trips left the docks, 9a, 12n and 3p.

The humpbacks were busy feeding again, mostly along a line parallel to the shore but 9 miles out. There were several instances of surface lunge feeding especially on the 9a and 12n trips. Seabirds were active at all the feeding sites, but, strangely, no California sea lions were present today. Among all the feeding highlights of the day there was a fascinating series of upside down surface lunging on the 12 noon trip. The ventral grooves could clearly be seen fully expanded. This was accomplished by a large female accompanied by her calf.
