14+ giant blue whales, a fin whale and plenty of dolphins

2018 06-27 SB Channel

The action has moved west along the north face of beautiful Santa Cruz Island and most of the wildlife is now a few miles out from the famous Painted Cave.  Today we closely watched 14 blue whales (at least 20 were in the area), 1 fin whale and 300 long-beaked common dolphins.  Overcast skies cleared quickly to sun, with a slight chop on the ocean surface. We are extremely fortunate to have had so many giant blue whales in our zone for so long.

Among the multitudes of blue whales in the area today there was another mother and calf pair.  This was not the pair we saw yesterday with the juvenile we call “Wave.”  The good news is that there are several young whales in the area now.  During the blue whale festivities a single fin whale popped up and we had good looks.  Also, several hundred dolphins passed through the whale zone and some diverted their attention to the Condor Express, per usual.  The trip today also featured a trip inside the famous Painted Cave and a tour of the northern sea cliffs of the island. Captain Dave provided timely details about the geology, paleontology, prehistoric populations and current environmental considerations as the tour progressed.
