A trip across the Channel yields humpbacks, dolphins and a fin whale

It was mostly overcast with small patches of sun here and there, except for the waters north of Santa Rosa Island which had bright sunshine. Captain Dave and his crew ran across the Channel to get great looks today, and we closely watched: 4000 long-beaked common dolphin, 2 humpback whales and 1 fin whale.

North of The Lanes and off the western end of Santa Cruz Island, we located a fin whale. The whale was all business and moved long distances during its 10-minute average down times. A few groups of several hundred dolphins each came through the area.

Continuing west as the wind and swells picked up, we found a mega pod of dolphins with at least 3000 animals. Two humpbacks were seen in the middle of them. The whales followed the dolphins as they searched for food.

You never know what mother nature has in store.
