Image: a humpback whale near the Santa Barbara Coast

A single noon trip left the docks with sunny skies and bumpy seas. The bumps came from strong winds to the west and north. Sightings for the trip included: 2 humpback whales and 200 long-beaked common dolphins.
To escape some of the rough inshore conditions, Captain Dave and the crew rand out about 5 miles south of the harbor then turned west. We moved slowly through the on-coming seas until 2 individual humpbacks were located off Goleta Point. One had a pure white tail and that was the one we spent most of our time watching. It had 6 minute dive times and came by the boat a couple of times to take a look at its fan club.
A herd of dolphins passed through the area as we were watching the humpback, and they, too, got boat friendly at times.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
