Humpbacks, Commons and Risso’s

2015 07-23 SB Channel

Calm seas and overcast skies characterized our day out in the Santa Barbara Channel today. Captain Eric and his crew closely watched 3 humpback whales, 2,000 long-beaked common dolphins and 11 Risso’s dolphins.

Our first stop and first #whale was to the west of Santa Barbara and this animal was migrating non-stop to the west accompanied by #dolphins.   After some nice looks we next ran to the south and the west end of Santa Cruz Island. A nice visit to the Painted Cave topped off this phase of the adventure.

Outside the cave we ran along The Ledge looking for large whales. There were none in the immediate vicinity but we did have the good fortune of encountering about 11 Risso’s dolphins. Later, on the trip home, two more humpbacks and lots more dolphins put a nice finish on the excursion.

PS   Don’t forget our trip next Monday runs from 1pm to 530pm.
