Ideal conditions for blue whales and dolphins

2018 06-02 SB Channel

Captain Dave and his crew found ideal conditions in the Santa Barbara Channel with blue, sunny skies all day.  Seas were calm and blue water dominated the southern section near beautiful Santa Cruz Island.  Sightings included 4 giant blue whales and 200 long-beaked common dolphins.

The earliest sighting occurred when a small pod of dolphins located the Condor Express. As readers of this report and regular wildlife watchers know, there is always and interplay between us and them, them and us. Couple this magic with the clear blue water we found today and things really popped.

Near the eastern end of the Island, blue whales (first a single, then three more) were found and watched.  The single had very short dive times and was wonderful to watch.  One of the trio turned out to be a regular tail fluker…a less often viewed behavior; very special.

On the way home a larger herd of dolphins found us. It was a wonderful punctuation to the wildlife encounters of the day.
