Colleagues,
The scorecard for today:
300 Common Dolphins
2 Blue Whales
12 Humpback Whales
10 JUV Mola mola
thousands of active sea lions
As you no doubt gathered from the subject line of this message, there was abundant near-surface krill today out on the grounds. In our immediate vicinity we closely watched as 2 giant Blue Whales and at least a dozen Humpbacks performed surface lunge feeding non-stop for the entire time we were on station. There was more visible baleen today than anytime in recent memory…a merciless slaughter of the crustaceans though. Again we saw the mother and calf Humpback pair that was out there yesterday, and there were many many friendly close approaches by almost every Humpback in the mix. The non-stop anticts of the California Sea Lions, as they followed the Humpbacks and pestered them, was hillarious and made for some really special interaction photographs. I'll post up my shots ASAP…hopefully by Sunday night. You gotta see this wildlife now while it's hot.
