Mugging, lunging and loads of sunshine

2023 6-20 SB Channel

Sunny, blue skies prevailed in the Channel and winds were light until the very end of the excursion. The water clarity was excellent on the whale grounds. Sightings included 6 humpback whales, 1 Minke whale and 3500 long-beaked common dolphins.

On the way out to a productive area on the edge of The Lanes, we had a single, fast look at a lone Minke whale. Also, there were a few scattered dolphins around, but on the hot spot there were thousands.

After reaching the edge of The Lanes, a region festooned with dolphins immediately produced a pair of juvenile humpback whales. The quickly became friendly with the Condor Express and mugged us for 45 minutes. It was splendid. A single adult joined the pair and did a bit of surface lunge-feeding (see today’s photograph).

Later we had quick looks and another pair of humpbacks and single.

You never know what mother nature has in store.
