Image: two gray whales near the Santa Barbara coast.

Passengers on both the 9a and 12n trips were treated to a magnificent sky with dark clouds and rain squalls interrupted by bright patches of blue and sun. Seas were calm. Sightings included 2 Pacific gray whales.
A keen-eyed passenger spotted our only pair as we rounded Platform Holly. The whales were northbound and were south of the oil rig. During our 40 min encounter, they never deviated from their migratory path, never dove longer than a few minutes and, sadly, never fluked-up. Otherwise we had spectacular looks and they were very cooperative.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
