Eight humpback whales and over 1000 long-beaked common dolphins were located and closely watched. Skies were sunny. Seas had a moderate bump, but the skillful boat handling of our Captain Colton minimized any discomfort and provided a stable platform for viewing. The Condor Express ran offshore about 9 miles and stayed well to the north of The Lanes.
Sightings began about 2 miles out from The Mesa with a generally busy whale and several hundred dolphins. The whale came into our immediate area for some nice looks.
Later 2 adult whales then 2 juveniles were located. One threw its mighty tail close to the boat and added some drama to an otherwise peaceful whale watching experience. A whale in the distance was seen breaching.
On the way home, perhaps 2 miles beyond the Carpinteria oil platforms, a trio of very special whales located the Condor Express. All three whales did not just come into our area, they seriously mugged us. We spent nearly ¾ hour watching them wave their tail flukes near our railings, look at us eyeball-to-eyeball, and send everyone moving from side to side as they frequently passed under the boat for all to see. What an encounter! Scattered dolphins came through the area as well. Hats off to Captain Colton and his talented crew for a truly wonderful and unique day.
