Captain Dave and the crew slowly made their way across a moderately bumpy ocean with a fresh breeze, especially out in The Lanes where some of the action was located. Fortunately, after the initial session, Dave moved northeast, and the winds died down a bit. Sightings included: 4 humpback whales, 2500 long-beaked common dolphins and 100 California sea lions.
Out in The Lanes, we closely watched 3 humpback whales feeding just beneath the ocean surface, plus a 4th whale that was nearby. The last whale made a few close passes by the Condor Express. In the same area, the whales were feeding alongside at least 1000 dolphins, with seabirds and sea lions also in abundance.
After a short trip to the 2nd hot spot, we watched 3 large dolphin pods with 500 – 700 individuals each. Again, birds and sea lions were there.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
