In addition to the gray stratus layer, it was also a bit hazy for most of the morning. It cleared up and we had some sunshine later. There was a fresh breeze and some choppiness. Sightings for the day we’re good: 14 humpback whales (we watched 6) and 50 California sea lions.

In an area north west of The Buoy and extending out into The Lanes, there were spouts here and there, widely dispersed. Occasionally we would see a breach. Captain Dave and the crew moved carefully from whale to whale we got close. Most of the whales were adults and were singletons. They seemed to be engaged in sub-surface feeding and would occasionally show their tail flukes during their terminal dives.

The last whale encounter was a mother with her calf. A third whale, possibly an escort, came in and joined them. Mom and calf made a close approach and came up the side of the boat. (See today’s photo for an example).

The crew also retrieve two balloons from the ocean surface.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
