BLUE whales and dolphins

Sea conditions were fairly flat until we reached The Lanes where the wind picked up the things got a little bit choppy. The high overcast gray broke into sunlight at the same time. Captain Dave and the crew ran a southerly hitting from the Harbor to the western end of beautiful Santa Cruz Island. Sightings for the day included: 300 common dolphins and 3 giant blue whales.

Two medium-sized pods of dolphins located the Condor Express today. The first was just 2 miles off the beach. The second was out near the island during our whale watching. We had good looks on both sightings.

North of the island we encountered a single adult giant blue whale. It had short, eight minute dive times. It passed by the boat closely a couple of times.

About 3 miles east we found a pair of small/juvenile blue whales. Great to look see with their spouts being spread asunder by the wind. (See today’s photograph for example).

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
