Calm seas again! Blue and fin whales, thousands of dolphins!
2020 06-26 SB Channel – East
Flat and glassy seas prevailed for the 3rd consecutive day and enhanced the wonderful mammal observations (and general seascapes, selfie backgrounds, etc.). Today we closely watched 2 fin whales, 1 giant blue whale and 2500 long-beaked common dolphins.
Dolphins were abundant all day, starting just past the Summerland oil platforms which we passed on our course heading towards Santa Cruz Island’s eastern end. Pods of these friendly mammals located the Condor Express going and coming.
The behemoths were watched in The Lanes and adjacent to Pedro Point, Santa Cruz Island. The lone giant blue was a great whale to watch as it kicked up its tail frequently. Of the fins, one was huge (at least 70ft by all estimates), and the other was smaller. Both were very regular in their dive cycles and they, too, looked fantastic against the mirror ocean surface.
