Captain Danny and the crew ran from the harbor to a spot 5 miles north of Chinese Harbor, Santa Cruz Island, a southeastern league course. Skies are overcast Cesar calm and there was no wind today. Sightings included 1 fin whale and 1600 common dolphins.
A small pod of dolphins was scattered all approximately 1 1/2 miles out from the harbor. They were busy feeding and paid very little attention to the boat. We continued southeast. When we were south of the lanes off of Chinese, we found a large fin whale. It was moving fast to the west. We watched some nice surface intervals. Soon, a megapod dolphins joined the fun.
On the way home we came upon a large adult fur seal that was entangled in fishing net. With the help of our friends onboard the Velella, we were able to free the animal.
