Hotspot feeding frenzy yields 5 humpbacks, 200 dolphins.

2019 05-06 SB Channel

Captain Colton and his crew ran a single noon excursion today with light overcast skies and calm seas. Sightings included 5 humpback whales and 200 long-beaked common dolphins.

The action today was centered around and inside an oceanic hot spot located about 5 miles south of UCSB. Here we watched thousands of hungry seabirds diving, vocalizing and generally creating a wild atmosphere in which a couple hundred dolphins and 5 humpback whales joined in the feeding. Among the humpbacks, one breached near the Condor Express and two were seen lunge-feeding on the surface as we first approached the area. Spectacular!
