Lots of gray whales and massive herds of dolphins.

Lots of gray whales and massive herds of dolphins.

On the way across the Santa Barbara Channel we ran across the first of two giant herds of common dolphins.  They were feeding on big bait balls of northern anchovies and took some time off to ride with the Condor Express and say hello to everyone.  Further across the Channel a second massive herd was encountered, and Captain Dave estimated the total population of common dolphins to be nearly 3,000.  Near Santa Cruz Island we came across several nice groups of gray whales, a group of 3 whales then a group of 4.  They gave us great looks and fluked up quite often.  The whale adventure was punctuated by a nice visit to the world famous Painted Cave on Santa Cruz Island.

Our next Island Whale Watch trip will be Thursday. Next weekend we shift over and start watching for northbound coastal whales.

You never know…
