2020 07-24 SB Channel
It was another fine day in the land of the giants. Skies started off with that typical high stratus layer and the sun broke out just about noon. Seas were still calm and glassy. The action was 5 miles north of the eastern end of beautiful Santa Rosa Island, and sightings included: 600 long-beaked common dolphins, 12 offshore bottlenose dolphins and 5 giant blue whales.
A nice, spread-out group of active surface-feeding common dolphins greeted us only two miles outside the harbor entrance. Seabirds were actively diving all around various small hotspots that stretched laterally, up and down the coast, for about a mile. Later, on the way home, we’d see a large nursery pod with loads of tiny dolphins.
Also on the way home, a small group of offshore bottlenose dolphins located the Condor Express and kept us company for a while. The group was friendly and actively surfed our waves (as did the commons).
South of The Lanes near Santa Rosa the tall spouts were active too. We saw a tight pair, feeding and surfacing together, plus three additional single whales within the zone. Several nice tail flukes, seen on the glassy water, rounded out the sighting.
