Whoa! What a day!

2020 06-30 SB Channel

Blue skies burned through the morning stratus early in the trip and seas were calm all day as Captain Dave and his crew worked the front side of Santa Cruz Island. Results of this course heading included 2000 long-beaked common dolphins, 1 fin whale, 2 humpback whales and 2 giant blue whales.

Two distinct bands of ocean were rich with dolphin activity today. Starting close to shore, about 4 miles out, and continuing to The Lanes we saw loads of scattered pods. Again, on the way back to the harbor, similar dolphin patterns were observed. Naturally both patches of activity included loads of animals coming to the Condor Express and riding our waves.

The first whale encounter was south of The Lanes and mid-island. It was a very large blue whale that was not shy around the boat and featured lots of beautiful tail flukes. Moving west, adjacent to the Painted Cave, 2 humpback whales and a single fin were also watched by all. On the final westward course and off the far west end of the island, we saw our second giant blue whale. What a day!
