Captain Eddy, along with Captain Benson and the crew, ran both a 9 AM and a 12 noon excursion today as the breeze increased with time. The ocean surface was a bit bumpy and by the end of the afternoon trip the wind on top of the bump made for an exciting whale watching experience. Speaking personally, there’s nothing better than watching humpback whales do their thing on a windy day! Total sightings for the day included 11 humpback whales (8 whales watched closely )and 2000 common dolphins.
We were just south of The Farm when we came across 3 large adult humpback whales. One of them was huge, a suspected female, the others were “just” large, suspected males. They popped up close to the boat (see today’s photo for an example), and vocalized issuing trumpet blows.
During this whale encounter we noticed a megapod of common dolphins nearby. Possibly the largest birdnado we’ve seen in quite some time attracted the dolphins and also 2 more whales to the area. There were more spouts in the area that we did not have time to investigate.
At noon we were just a bit south of The Farm where we found 2 very shy whales and had quick looks. They spent a lot of time down and did some zig zagging while submerged.
Not too far away we found a single big adult humpback. It went intp a tail throwing marathon session. It was a fantastic site to see with the wind sending its tail spray everywhere. Nat Geo for sure.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
