Captain Dave and his crew ran out to the separation zone in The Lanes and back again on flat, calm seas with high stratus all day. Sightings were good, including: 2 whales with humps, and 2,000 dolphins long beaks. The crew also removed 5 dangerous, floating, decaying helium balloons that someone released on land then blew out to sea and died.
Common dolphins were scattered all over the Channel in small pods starting when we were about 5 miles off UCSB Campus Point. Dolphin interactions continued out and back, all the way home.
Both humpback whales were large adult animals. The first was near the NOAA East Channel buoy, mixed in with lots of dolphins. The second whale found us as we turned homeward from watching more dolphins in the separation zone between the northbound and southbound shipping lanes. This second leviathan fluked up and showed its tail on every breath! It also paid two nice, close visits to the Condor Express like taking victory laps in front of its fans.
