With a high stratus layer that cleared just after noon and flat, calm seas all day, Captain Dave and the crew of the Condor Express closely watched a lot of cetaceans today. 11 humpback whales and 3,000 long-beaked dolphins were observed. The action took place 5 or 6 miles offshore between The Mesa and UCSB.
“The Summer of the Dolphins” Dolphins were everywhere and formed large pods at times. They found the Condor Express when we were traveling and when we were watching whales. The whales and dolphins were mixed together every time we found them. Regular readers will know that the summer of 2019 has been very consistent in terms of whale watching, and the dolphins have been omnipresent. Lucky for dolphin lovers!
Today we started watching whales (with dolphins) south of Goleta Bay, and this continued to a point just west of Platform Holly. There were large whales and juveniles. There were singles, doubles, triples and a group of 5. They all appeared to be feeding subsurface together with their smaller and more numerous cousins. We could just as easily call this the “Summer of the Humpbacks.”
