With a boat load of holiday visitors, Captain Devin and his crew found zero visibility fog for most of the trip along with a big, short interval, west swell. It was nautical. Once again, the sharp eyes the captain and his crew somehow pulled together one of the most fantastic days we've had so far this month...all of this in the fog! Sightings today included: 22+ humpback whales and 5000 long-beaked common dolphins.
All of the action today was located between the NOAA East Channel Buoy and Platform Habitat. Things got started close to the buoy when we found a humpback cow-calf pair milling around in the fog. From there we moved northeast. Somehow the crew found an area flush with dolphins and whales spouts. Everywhere we looked cetaceans large and small were abundant. All of them seem to be busy feeding subsurface consequently they were no aerial acrobatics today. But, to see all this marine life in one place through the misty lens of the fog was quite spectacular.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
