It was yet another beautiful, calm and sunny day in the Santa Barbara Channel. Captain Dave and the crew located and watched 4 gray whales and 50 long-beaked common dolphins.

Two gray whales were spotted east of Santa Barbara Harbor and were seen circling around and zig-zagging a bit but definitely moving in a westerly direction…as if they were north bounders. From here we moved offshore.

A second pair of gray whales was found just north of The Lanes in the mid-Channel region. This is important to know because the pair consisted of a medium-small sized adult with a tiny, nearly newborn calf. They were southbound. Mid-Channel whales don’t get much protection from potential killer whale attacks, so best wishes were bestowed on these animals.

After further explorations off the coast of Goleta and Santa Barbara we finally were located by a small group of common dolphins. The wonderful sea conditions made them even more spectacular than usual to watch.
