8+ humpbacks, lots of dolphins and 2 dense fog banks.

2025 08–07 SB Channel

There were two distinct bands of dense fog. One was along the coast and another just north of the lanes. The sea surface was mostly glassy until a light breeze wafted across the channel in the afternoon. Captain Eddy and the crew headed southwest to a point 3 miles north of the lanes. Sightings included: 3500 common dolphins and 8+ humpback whales.

Our first stop was just a bit north of the farm. There were 500 dolphins scattered amongst four birdnados. We watched a total of 3 whales in this area, all were juveniles that were swimming slowly on the surface and had very short dive times.

North of the lanes, in the second fog bank, we first found a single juvenile whale moving east. A bit further along there was a pair that consist of 1 large and 1 small whale. The big one engaged in some mighty tail throwing. (See today’s photo for an example). Two additional individual whales came into the area and made close approaches by the Condor Express. Both of these were good tail flukers.

You never know what mother nature has in store.

Note: with the interior of California experiencing a heat wave, I would predict additional foggy patches ahead of us.
