8 humpbacks, two serious muggers…dolphins too!

2019 07-02 SB Channel

Captain Dave and the crew hung out within 6 miles of the mainland coast today, due to windy seas and choppy conditions offshore and near the islands. Nonetheless, it was an outstanding day for cetacean sightings, including: 8 humpback whales and 600 long-beaked common dolphins.

There was a patch of whale and dolphin activity which included 5 or 6 whales and a few hundred dolphins. We watched the dolphins interact with the whales, and had great looks. Moving a bit northwest and a few miles closer to shore we encountered 2 additional whales (and more dolphins). This was a large, adult with a smaller sub-adult or juvenile whale. The pair made some very close passes by the Condor Express and everyone had spectacular views. After a while the larger whale swam off and the smaller whale stayed around and got even friendlier. It interacted with dolphins and sea lions while its fan club on the boat soaked it up.
