Captain Eddy and the crew traveled S from the harbor and crossed the lanes for a few minutes out near Prisoners. Seas were glassy all day, and skies were sunny. Sightings for the day included: 5 humpback whales and 300 offshore bottlenose dolphins.
To adult humpback whales were watched as they were in slow travel mode with long surface intervals for optimum visibility. They put up their tail flutes regularly and we’re generally a big hit with their fans aboard the Condor Express.
A bit further S we intercepted a spread out, large pod of offshore bottlenose dolphins. Per usual, they were very active. They put on quite an aerial display with high flying, and acrobatic maneuvers. They did quite a bit of wake riding, and there appeared to be a bit of mating and socializing going on. As is typical, there were quite a few calves in the group.
On the edge of the lanes we watched three additional whales. There were 2 large adults and 1 small one. Like the dolphins, there was a lot of socializing going on among the whales. This included quite a bit of rolling around and body contact. Some vocalization was heard. At one point the smaller individual did a headstand.
You never know what mother nature has in store.
