A beautiful, but a bit bumpy, day with good sightings.

Captain Eddy and the crew report nice sunny skies with light winds all day. There was, however, a moderate bump from the strong winds we had yesterday and overnight. Another big plus: the water was very clear today. Sighings for the day included 5 humpback whales and 4000 common dolphins.

We moved offshore about 5 miles to the SW. Here we found about 200 dolphins spread out in small groups of maybe 10 or 20 each. They were cruising slowly and milling at times. We had good looks.

We continued S until we found a single juvenile humpback whale mixed in with a megapod of at least 3000 dolphins. The whale had a short dive times. We got good close looks.

Captain Eddy turned SW and ended up just a bit W of platform Habitat. There were 4 additional whales in this area, made up of a trio and then a fourth whale that came by for a while later in the sighting. The trio was in slow travel mode and all were good flukers. It was 2 adults with 1 juvenile. Several groups of common dolphins came and went through the area during our time with the trio. The fourth whale I mentioned above came right past our bow during a close approach. (See today’s photo for an example).

Our route back to the harbor took us very close to platform Charlie. Captain Eddy slowed for a while and discussed oil and gas exploration in the Channel and platform C.

You never know what mother nature has in store.
