A beauty of a day in the far west results in many thousands of dolphins and a lunge-feeding humpback.

Captain Eddy reports glassy conditions all day with a 1-foot swell. The crew took the Condor Express to the far western Channel and ended up with a hot spot (and a whale) just north of Platform Hondo. Sightings included: 5000 common dolphins, 1 humpback whale and 15 California sea lions.

The glassy seas enhanced the great looks we had all day at various sizes of common dolphin pods. We saw dolphins from the harbor to Hondo, pretty much non-stop. A large surface anchovy bait ball was found at the aforementioned hot spot. Larger numbers of dolphins were feeding alongside California sea lions.

A single whale was also feeding here. We followed at a safe distance as it took long dives and sway an elusive, zig-zag pattern. Finally, it settled near the bait ball and we experienced some wonderful surface lunge feeding.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
