Conditions were good again today with clear skies and calm seas. Sightings included 2000 long-beaked common dolphins and 1 humpback whale.
We watched 3 different groups of dolphins today starting with the smallest pod which was no more than a mile off Leadbetter. After pausing to take a look at the Santa Barbara Kelp Farm (see today’s photo), we found a medium-sized dolphin pod about 8 miles out. This second pod was in transit and heading east. Finally, inside The Lanes, a true mega-pod of 1500 or so dolphins was encountered.
Our whale encounter consisted of a small adult (or large juvenile) humpback whale which we found on the north edge of The Lanes. It appeared to be searching the area for food and, thus, didn’t approach the Condor Express. It did fluke up nicely several times though.
