All sorts of humpack whales and more.

Captain Eddy and the crew ran west and found whales near the hear yesterday’s spot south of Isla Vista. The trip continued to the southeast and ended up just past The Buoy. There was absolutely no wind and it got legitimately warm on board. The bump was moderate from the west. Sightings: California sea lions 250, humpback whales 9+. A single deflated mylar balloon was picked up just outside The Harbor

Our first birdnado was, as stated above, in approximately the same area we found life yesterday… 8 miles off Isla Vista. Things started out with 2 adult whales that were vertically lunge feeding. A third whale that had been breaching nearby, joined to make a trio, but strangely it did not feed with the other two. The third whale became friendly with the boat and mugged us for two hours. Captain Eddy said was closer and was more tame than any other whale so far this season. It was almost touching the boat. It rolled around, swam upside down and passed under the bow. When it came up, the spout spray got folks on the bow wet. Sea lions were everywhere.

After this long session, we moved southeast where we had seen a spout. We never caught up with the whale. Continuing east, we found another large birdnado. This supported 5 additional whales including a mother with her calf. The adults were feeding while the calf lobbed it’s tail and breached twice, completely out of the water, and close to the boat. More sea lions here too. There were more spouts in the area that we could not get to as time ran out.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
