Image: A giant blue whale in the Santa Barbara channel
2020 05–08 SB Channel
There were clear blue skies in the Channel today, and no wind. But that same pesky westerly bump was still running. Sightings today were phenomenal: 1 giant blue whale, 1 giant Fin whale, 1 small Minke whale, and 1500 common dolphins.
2 miles south of the harbor we were surrounded by 1500 common dolphins that were spread out over several miles. Lots of bird activity all around. We all had great looks at the dolphins.
Continuing south to The Buoy, we found a single Minke whale and watched it for a while. It was a good sighting.
We went into The Lanes, started moving east, and came upon a giant fin whale. It was friendly and was a great photo op. Nearby, we were shocked to find a giant blue whale. Both of these giants were feeding subsurface with about eight minutes down times. Spectacular views!
