Both afternoon trips were bumpy but productive. The late trip encountered a sideways lunging humpback.

Captain Eddy and the crew ran two afternoon public whale watching excursions: 12n and 3pm. Although skies were sunny and bright, seas were a bit bumpy. Total sightings for the day: 2 humpback whales (more in the area), 5 common dolphins and 6 California sea lions.

The noon trip took us about 8 miles offshore, between The Farm and Platform Habitat. Here, amidst the surface chop, we located and watched a single humpback whale. It was in travel mode, moving west. We had good looks before heading home.

At 3pm we headed to the eastern Channel where our friend Captain Devin on board the Velella had spotted a different humpback. It was a large adult whale and spent most of its time feeding on the surface using dramatic sideways lunges. (See today’s photo for an example). On the bumpy ride home there were other spouts in the distance. Near the Summerland Rigs we came across a small birdnado that hosted 5 dolphins and a handful of California sea lions.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
