Sunny skies with moderate surface chop from the west made moving in that direction uncomfortable. Light winds in the morning quickly gave way to a strong breeze. Sightings were very good: 6+ humpback whales and 1000 common dolphins.
Our first wildlife encounter was with a pair of whales about 8 miles from shore. They hand long surface times and were friendly with the boat. Dolphins were spread out in the area. Good looks were had by all. About a mile away, we watched a single whale doing a lot of lunge-feeding. (See today’s photo for an example). Soon the initial pair joined to make a trio.
A lot of breaching led us to another activity pair. Their breaching soon gave way to some mighty lob tailing. A 6th whale was nearby. As we slowly turned to head home, the last whale began to do some major kelping.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
