Challenging sea conditions but some amazingly good wildlife sightings.

Image: a very friendly humpback whale mugged the boat and included several spy-hops to take a look at its fan club.

The wind and seas served-up a little Valentine’s Day surprise. In addition to the dark, rainy-looking sky, there was a strong SE wind and bump all day. Crafty Captain Dave and the crew tried to maneuver the boat for as much comfort as possible while still finding lots of wildlife: 15 common dolphins and 4 humpback whales.

Less than 2 miles out bound we had some quick looks at a single juvenile humpback whale. It was extremely shy and it took an erratic course, hence it was hard to follow.

About 9 miles offshore there was a much more cooperative group of 3 adult whales. They spent 20 minutes mugging the Condor Express. They worked both sides of the boat and did a lot of spy-hopping (See today’s photo for an example). One spy hub was so close that it touched our hull. After spending  quality time with the boat, the humpbacks broke away and continued feeding sub-surface.

You never know what mother nature has in store.
